How I Started Freelancing

August 1, 2018Lifestyle, Personal1

I decided that I wanted to make my blog a little personal which includes talking about my journey freelancing. Some people have asked about how I got involved in it and I figured why not share it. Plus I think it will be interesting to look back a year from now and see all the progress I’m going to make.

When I started my blog, I knew it was going to be a long while before I was going to be able to make an income off of it and do it full time. In fact, here I am over a year later and I’m still not making an income off it. However, that’s my fault because I haven’t dedicated the needed time but that’s a whole other story. So I started researching freelancing.

I knew I enjoyed writing so I figured why not get paid for it? So I found a few websites that others recommended (my go to and absolute favorite is Upwork) and started mass applying for jobs. Luckily I had my blog to use as a “portfolio” and I found my first job in no time. It was writing all about Palm Springs which was right up my alley.

At that point it was all about continuing to find other blogs to write for. And I continued to do so until I met with a client that has become my one of my good friend. When I told her what I was doing with my Pinterest account, she put me on her account and introduced me to my first huge client.

For those that didn’t know, I helped run Pinterest for Boss Babe, a company for badass women. When I got onto the account it already had 700k monthly views and 30,000+ followers. But I knew it could become more. So I worked on it every single day and shortly after it got up to 3 million monthly views and 40,000+ followers.

This really opened a lot of doors for me. I was now able to add it to my portfolio and use it as an example of what I could do with social media. That allowed me to start working on other Pinterest accounts (that I found through Upwork) which snowballed into working on Facebook and Instagram accounts.

I still look back on my journey and it’s crazy to me that I’ve come as far as I have without any experience. I started my Pinterest as a hobby and it’s become part of my career and it’s something that I thought would never happen. I now have two main clients that I work for and I’m continuing to apply for new jobs everyday.

I know that I can’t use Upwork and other freelance job sites forever but it’s working for me for now so I’m going to continue to use it for now. I’m going to start emailing companies (which scares the crap out of me) and offer my work so I will keep you all posted on how this goes!

In the end, I’ll be the first to tell you that freelancing is hard. And it’s easy to get down on yourself when things aren’t going the way you want, whether it be a client puts your work on pause or you aren’t getting as many jobs as you want. But I finally found something that I truly enjoy doing and it allows me the freedom to work for myself. I don’t see myself in a 9-5 job and so I’m going to keep trucking along.

I’m going to continue to keep you guys all updated with any big changes and I hope that if you’re considering going into freelancing that this helps in any way. XO
